“Hooting Owl” teaches lifts (slur-staccatos) and minimal LH movement across a short range of keys (RH remains in familiar 5-finger C position so that beginners need only concentrate on moving one hand). With a calm start that increases in volume and speed, Diminished is an unusually fun beginner waltz. RH and LH take turns playing broken chords in minor and diminished forms, changing octaves and dynamics to add mystery. Moonlit Walk is a somber beginner piece in C minor. It has moving melodic lines in both hands, played in turn so that the two hands are not moving simultaneously and so that beginners can focus their attention on the moving hand. It also has atypical hand positions (instead of both in C), all intervals are steps or skips (except one), and finger numbers are only included occasionally to help develop reading skills. Moonlit Walk is a contemporary beginner Halloween piece that is smooth, serious, and sad in tone.

This is an elementary piano arrangement of Grieg’s lyric piece “Puck”, all about the mischievous little kobold (or nisse/tomte) creature from Norwegian folklore. These fairy tale gnome-like creatures protect the family they live with from evil and misfortune, and even help with chores — unless they’re insulted, in which case they will play tricks, steal, or punish in other ways. Puck is a playful but easily offended creature, so one must please them with gifts to prevent their mischief!

When a giant passes by, the ground shakes, the earth quakes, and we all lose our footing! This original piano piece in A minor mimics the thunderous stomping of a giant’s feet with heavy bass tones offset by high treble tones. Between the Fee, Fi, Fo, Fums, the step-based melody uses soft staccato scales and smooth slurred turns to represent the feeling of trying to run away while slipping and falling.
