Für Elise: Simplified Easy Piano COMPLETE Classical Piano Arrangement
I have been arranging music on piano for over 20 years now. I love doing it for a variety of reasons, but one of my greatest motivators is to help students play the pieces they love.
Sometimes, a student wants to learn a piece that they can be taught in its original form. However, more often, an arrangement of their chosen piece must be found because the original is either too difficult or not written for piano.
Für Elise is "THE THING" that almost every piano student wants to learn. There's something about this Beethoven bagatelle that is just so lovely, and it's so recognizable that for a piano student to learn it feels like a rite of passage.
However, the average piano student is years away from the original version. It can easily take 5 or more years of dedicated study to even be able to attempt to play the original full Für Elise. It's not exactly easy.
It's also challenging to play the original if you have small hands. Numerous large melodic intervals make it difficult to reach if your handspan is less than one octave.
This simplified arrangement of Für Elise was made for piano students who are early intermediate level and/or have small hands, so that they don't have to wait for years to be able to play the original. It allows pianists to enjoy and perform Beethoven now while developing essential skills for the future mastery of Beethoven’s masterpieces.
Honoring Beethoven's Memory with this Für Elise Arrangement
While many arrangers always try to put their own spin on things, I think "the greats" are beloved for a reason. People love them exactly as they originally are. So when I have the opportunity to make an arrangement of a famous classic like Für Elise, my goal is to stay as close to the intentions of the original as possible.
This requires a strong familiarity with the music and composer. Obviously, I can't claim to know exactly what Beethoven was thinking when he composed Für Elise. However, I have played it countless times over the last 20 years, as well as multiple sonatas and other works by the great composer. I have studied his life, and I have the deepest respect for his music.
I spent a lot of time crafting this classical piano arrangement of Für Elise to match the integrity of Beethoven's original work. There were many revisions and multiple test students before this arrangement was finalized, and I am continuing to reexamine it for sections that may need improvement.
How This Simplified Arrangement of Für Elise Differs from Others
While trying to remain as true as possible to Beethoven's original music, this Für Elise simplified version ended up being very different from the other easy Für Elise arrangements I've come across. I was careful to preserve as many unique original elements as possible, including:
Original Key (A minor)
Für Elise always sounds best in A minor. Each key has a unique feel, and transposing changes the sound quality. To keep the feel as original as possible, I kept the arrangement in the original key.
Full Piece
Most Für Elise piano music arrangements have only the famous opening theme. But there's a reason Beethoven developed this theme into the subsequent themes, and they should not be ignored because they are less known. This arrangement is of the full Für Elise, with all three themes, to give it a "complete" feel.
Moving Momentum
Often, simplified arrangements strip away most of the accompaniment notes so that it's easier to play. But the eighth notes (quavers) in the accompaniment carry the momentum. A tempo marking believed to be on the original manuscript (now lost) is "poco moto", or "with a little motion", meaning this momentum is an essential part of Für Elise. This moving feel was kept as much as possible using eighth notes (quavers), with appropriate simplification for ease in playing.
Dynamics
I consulted many editions of the original Für Elise sheet music to ensure that the written dynamic markings were as accurate as possible.
Correct Note Ranges
Many simplified arrangements move the hands close to each other, adapting both melody and accompaniment to minimize hand movement. But changing octaves like this significantly alters the sound. This version of Für Elise for easy piano keeps both hands in the same general ranges as the original so that it has the same breadth and fullness of sound as the original version.
Same Chord Structure
The chords used to support the melody are just as important as the melody itself. No chords were reharmonized for this arrangement; it has the same chord structure with minimal respelling/inversions (adjusted for small hands and ease of playing).
It's Also Perfect for Small Hands!
As a teacher I have had the opportunity to work with a number of individuals who have small handspans. It's a constant challenge finding material to teach and inspire them without having to alter the music so that they are physically able to play it.
This is why I wrote this easy Für Elise arrangement for small hands. The largest harmonic interval is a Major 6th, which means that pianists with small hands can easily play this without altering any chords or sacrificing musicality.
I hope that with this arrangement, many more pianists will be able to enjoy learning to play and perform Für Elise. Playing an arrangement of a beloved classical piece can be a great motivator to continue improving your skills so that you will be able to master Beethoven's original piano music one day.
